I chose to create a vocabulary wiki because I want my students to learn new words, and to incorporate them in their vocabulary. In this wiki, students will add to a story until it becomes really long and funny. Then, I will start a new one. When the students read the new words in the story many times over, the words will eventually become a part of their lexicon. In addition, students will be introduced to a new word every day, and will be encouraged to practice writing with it. The children will be able to read paragraphs written by other wiki members, and in this way they will learn about how the vocabulary word can be used.
I will use this wiki for my fifth and sixth grader students from various schools. In this manner, the students will “meet” children their own age, and the wiki members will learn from each other. I will update the wiki as needed. The wiki will not be the only content-delivery tool, other vocabulary words will be taught as well. I think wikis serve as an excellent medium for discussions and collaborative learning. However, I do not think that I would use it for individual online portfolios, or as a space for collaborative note-taking.
